WHO WE ARE

Here at University of the Streets, we know that sometimes all it takes to change the world is a little support. Since our founding in 1969, we have been determined to make an impact. The core of our efforts is to bring our team’s fresh ideas and passion to the range of activities we’re involved in. Through all of our endeavors we hope to display the conviction behind our beliefs.

Children and Adolescents have so much to offer to the world - we believe in the power that they hold, and know that they will mold future generations to come. At University of The Streets, we are here to give them the support they need in order to shape them into leaders of the future. We have a number of educational programs and leadership initiatives that help nurture our youth and help them develop the skills they will carry throughout their lives. VOLUNTEER WORK

Get to Give Initiative

Since 1969, we have contributed to the development of New York City youth on the Lower East Side through our wide range of programs and will continue this practice under the Get to Give initiative. Centered on instilling strong values into our youth, mentees volunteer 10 hours per week at children’s hospitals, soup kitchens, and shelters. Program concludes with a trip to a chosen destination for the group of volunteers after completing 100 hours of community service providing opportunities for them to expand their minds, help their own communities while meeting new and interesting individuals.

MIXED MEDIA STUDIOS

At University of The Streets, we’re committed to building a society where every young person can easily realize their potential and achieve their goals. We believe that providing young creatives with a nurturing environment is essential to their overall development. We provide free audio engineering workshops after school for mentees interested in music related careers. Today’s youth are tomorrow’s leaders, and through personalized attention and guidance we are essentially providing them with all the resources they need to thrive in years to come.

OUR HISTORY

Committed to Making a Difference

The University of the Streets (UOTS) was incorporated in 1969 as a non-profit educational organization, spearheaded by the late Muhammad Salahuddeen and presently led by Executive Director Saadia Salahuddeen. Located in Manhattan’s lower east side (130 East 7th St, NY, NY) for 46 years,UOTS moved to the Little Italy section of The Bronx in 2015. UOTS continues to be committed to addressing the educational, vocational and cultural needs of the community. Initially, UOTS was launched to help “deprived” youngsters break out of a hopeless poverty-cycle. However, as a result of the historical and economic impact of its programs, today the target population has expanded to encompass all ages, races, socio-economic levels and cultural diversities. In its 46 year history through challenging and innovative programs UOTS has influenced countless lives. Many UOTS alumni and associates have attained distinguished, successful careers in music and other creative and fine arts—a fact in which UOTS takes with considerable humility. Through our challenges we at UOTS have also gained a wealth of experience that has taught us many valuable lessons about educating youth. UOTS continues to be a forerunner in establishing innovative approaches to teaching.
